Tobacco and deforestation: the overlooked environmental impact of tobacco farming on the world's forests

The scientific basis on quitting smoking was reviewed on a voluntary basis by Pr. Bertrand Dautzenberg , a tobacco specialist, in order to rule out gross, potentially dangerous errors. It reflects positions commonly shared by health professionals and health agencies, without always corresponding exactly to his thinking or his practice. He is not the author of this text; he has only carried out a vigilance review of it.

You know cigarettes are bad for your health. You may know that butts pollute. But did you know that smoking a pack of cigarettes also means taking part in the destruction of trees and forests on the other side of the planet? The tobacco industry is one of the great invisible polluters — long before the cigarette ever reaches your hand.

Curing: a massive consumption of wood

This is the most destructive stage. To turn the fresh leaf into smokable tobacco, the leaves must be cured in wood-fired barns.

Tobacco is one of the leading contributors to global deforestation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where it is grown.

The CO₂ footprint of the cigarette

Beyond the trees, tobacco contributes massively to global warming:

~84 million tonnes of CO₂ emitted each year by the full tobacco chain (production, transport, consumption, waste) — about 1/5 of global civil aviation emissions.

This footprint breaks down into:

  • Farming and chemical fertilisers.

  • Wood-fired curing (which releases the carbon stored in trees).

  • Global transport (leaves are often harvested in one country, processed in another, sold everywhere).

  • Industrial production of cigarettes.

  • Combustion of the cigarette itself.

Your questions

  • Does organic tobacco exist?

    Very marginally — a handful of growers offer 'less treated' tobacco, but this changes nothing about the health impact (it remains carcinogenic) or the deforestation tied to curing.
  • Is the French supply chain sustainable?

    France is a consumer country, not a major producer. Leaves come mainly from Brazil, the USA, Italy and India. The footprint is therefore essentially imported.
  • If I quit, what is the real impact on the environment?

    At the individual level, modest. But if 12 million French smokers quit → hundreds of millions of trees preserved in the long run, tonnes of CO₂ avoided.
  • Is vaping really greener?

    For rechargeable vapes, yes, in the vast majority of cases. For disposable puffs, no — it is even worse in terms of waste. That is also why puffs have been banned in France since 2025.
