AI quit smoking coaches: Aria, its competitors and the real-world effectiveness of virtual assistants
Chatbots boost quit rates by 66% according to Perski et al. Honest tour: Aria, SARAH (WHO), NHS Quit Smoking app, Kwit. Strengths, limits, and what is free.
The scientific basis on quitting smoking was reviewed on a voluntary basis by Pr. Bertrand Dautzenberg , a tobacco specialist, in order to rule out gross, potentially dangerous errors. It reflects positions commonly shared by health professionals and health agencies, without always corresponding exactly to his thinking or his practice. He is not the author of this text; he has only carried out a vigilance review of it.
Chatbots and AI coaches for quitting smoking have been around for almost 10 years. With the arrival of generative AI (ChatGPT and its cousins), they have become much more useful. Aria belongs to this new generation. Here is what we know — about Aria and the others — to help you choose, without hiding the competition or the limits.
Why an AI coach to quit smoking?
Quitting is long and erratic. A cigarette urge does not turn up during office hours of a stop smoking adviser. It hits at night, on a Sunday morning, after an argument. An AI coach available 24/7, able to personalise its responses based on your history, is precious for those moments.
Chatbot use by smokers has been associated with a 66% increase in quit chances compared with control groups.

AI coach vs stop smoking adviser
When an AI coach is enough
Moderate dependence, present motivation.
Need for daily support between real consultations.
Anonymity matters (fear of judgement, cultural context, etc.).
Difficult geographic access to a stop smoking adviser.
When you need a human
Strong dependence (Fagerstrom 7+) requiring medication.
Psychiatric comorbidity (depression, bipolar).
Pregnancy, heart disease, complex treatment.
Multiple past failures: need for a structured approach.

Your questions
-
Can an AI coach really be more effective than a human?
Differently, not more. An AI coach is available 24/7, endlessly patient, anonymous and free or cheap. A human brings real clinical listening, prescriptions if needed, and long-term follow-up. The two complement each other. -
Will my data be protected with an AI coach?
Depends on the service. Aria hosts data in Europe (GDPR), sells nothing, and works without sign-up in anonymous mode. Consumer AI chats like raw ChatGPT do not offer the same confidentiality guarantee. -
What about raw ChatGPT to quit smoking?
Better than nothing, but limited: no continuous personalisation, risk of generic advice, sometimes errors. For this specific topic, a specialised coach will be more useful. -
How much do these AI coaches cost?
Many are freemium. The NHS Quit Smoking app is fully free. Kwit offers premium at around 60 GBP/year. Aria gives 50 free messages/day + 14 days at full access, then 20 GBP/month. SARAH (WHO) is fully free. -
Can the AI prescribe me patches?
No. No AI is allowed to prescribe medication. For subsidised NRT, you need a prescription from a doctor, midwife, nurse or pharmacist (depending on country). -
Does Aria really work, or is it just marketing?
Aria draws on scientifically validated methods (CBT, motivational interviewing, mindfulness) and its documentation is reviewed by Prof Dautzenberg. But as with any recent tool, specific outcome studies on Aria are not yet published in independent journals. That is a medium-term goal.
